May 12 2024: Annual Mother’s Day Concert

Sunday, May 12, 2024 – 1 pm
Landmark Center, St. Paul, MN

Ravel: Menuet antique
Bruch: Canzone for cello and orchestra
Tim Perry, cello
Brahms: Piano Quartet No. 1, orchestrated by Arnold Schoenberg

This program features works that were not originally written for the symphony orchestra at all!

Maurice Ravel decided to give his youthful piano miniature, the Menuet antique, a second life by orchestrating it himself.

Twentieth-century composer, Arnold Schoenberg, wanted to give Johannes Brahms’ Piano Quartet No. 1 a bigger canvas. Schoenberg loved the piece, but felt the pianist’s part too easily overpowered the three string players. Schoenberg used the full resources of the modern symphony orchestra to create his own “ideal” version of Brahms’ masterpiece.

SPCS principal cellist, Timothy Perry, is featured as soloist in Max Bruch’s Canzone for cello and orchestra.
